Failure analysis of a human tibia

Tibia Under Axial Load

Two failure checks on a human tibia: a one-leg landing and an off-center axial load.

Aim

Find out whether a tibia survives a one-leg landing, and where the peak stress falls when load is applied off center on its irregular cross-section.

Tools
  • Finite element analysis
  • Energy methods
  • Section properties measured by hand, by digital grid, and by pixel integration
Skills
  • Finite element analysis
  • Centroidal calculations
  • Worst case analysis
  • Yield conditions
Outcome

Four section methods cross-checked, a missing product of inertia found in the hand calculation, and the landing impact shown to sit close to the bone's yield load.

Detail

The eccentric load puts the bone in compression on one side and tension on the other, both well below its strength. The landing check has far less margin.
